RIICE and BRIA: Synergies, Linkages and Opportunities for Partnership

Globally, the livelihoods of more than 1 billion people depend upon rice cultivation (RIICE, 2014). Rice is a staple food for half of the world’s population and in particular for the Asia-Pacific region, where over 90% of all globally available rice is produced and consumed. An estimated fourth of the Asian population is still poor and has a significant unmet demand for rice (Papademetriou). Knowing this, it is crucial to boost yields in a sustainable manner, using fewer resources and benefitting the world as a whole. A sustainable development of the rice sector should promote the development of an efficient, inclusive, and resilient rice value chain by focusing on improved productivity, adoption of best practices, and better risk management ... We need to bring on board the private sector

Rice is the most important staple food in Thailand and a significant economic factor. 3.7 million rice farmers grow the cereal on about 12 million hectares – equivalent to one fifth of total land use. The country produced about 35 million tons of paddy rice in 2012; around 50% was sold abroad. However, Mr. Chanpithya Shimphalee, Director General of the Rice Department in Thailand, is still not happy: “Farmers often use low quality seeds, apply too much or the wrong kind of fertiliser and pesticide, and most importantly lack knowledge. As a result, they have high costs and low returns. Continue reading
