We need to bring on board the private sector

Rice is the most important staple food in Thailand and a significant economic factor. 3.7 million rice farmers grow the cereal on about 12 million hectares – equivalent to one fifth of total land use. The country produced about 35 million tons of paddy rice in 2012; around 50% was sold abroad. However, Mr. Chanpithya Shimphalee, Director General of the Rice Department in Thailand, is still not happy: “Farmers often use low quality seeds, apply too much or the wrong kind of fertiliser and pesticide, and most importantly lack knowledge. Training for Sustainable Rice Production in Ubon Ratchathani Province

Thailand produces an annual oversupply of 4.43 million ton of paddy rice or 2.92 million ton of milled rice.To balance the supply and demand, according to Mr. Chanpithya Shimphalee, Director General of the Rice Department (RD), the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MoAC) will implement the rice production restructuring plan.
