Now that I’m a professional touring artist myself, I wanted to revisit quotes from my favorite all-time artists to see if they’re still relevant. They are.
Is one waveform going up when the other is going down? Then that’s probably the culprit. Modern DAWs and plugin manufacturers have numerous solutions to “nudge” tracks in either direction, so experiment with what you have.

“The situation with PledgeMusic is incredibly heartbreaking for musicians and their fans,” says Bandzoogle’s Director of Artist & Industry Outreach, Dave Cool. “And it’s yet another reminder that as an industry, we need to do much better by the musicians we’re trying to help. With Bandzoogle, artists can be assured that any money their fans pledge to their campaigns is reaching them directly, and immediately.”
His campaign seeks funds to create a Scratch Academy in Denver (not to be confused with the Scratch DJ Academy in New York with which Rob Swift is associated) as a result of local funding cuts for music and arts programs in schools recently. Not only is this a touching endeavor, but Jesu also uses his Kickstarter page as a place to post volunteer and freelance opportunities. In 2013, I started listening to a band called Groovanova and wanted to buy their records. I was heartbroken to find out they had none because they didn’t know how to do it, who to work with, or whether their albums would sell. Have you ever heard the term “glue” in a conversation about recording and mixing? No, I’m not talking about the kind you used to put on your hands in elementary so you could peel it off when it dried. (Am I the only one who did that?)
This method might at first seem complicated, but your eyes are quicker than your fingers, so having reference points to refer to all around the guitar fretboard is a great first step towards familiarity.
Here’s a spring chicken by comparison, but with a maturity to her practice that’s mind-blowing and brilliant. Born in 1982, Caroline Shaw is an American Pulitzer Prize winning composer, singer, and violinist. Etching her name into the annals of history forever in 2013 with her work Partita for 8 Voices, this ground-breaking piece explores some incredible vocal techniques including Inuit-inspired throat singing, or “hocketing,” and the American folk hymn “Shining Shore.” Composed and performed by Roomful of Teeth, this incredible group including Shaw is described by NPR as “gleefully dismantling the traditional definition of ensemble singing right before our ears!”
